Favorite Book Character Dress Up Day – Monday, March 2, 2019
In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, Read Across America, and the celebration of literacy we will dress up as our favorite book characters on Monday, March 2. Which book character is your favorite? It can be as simple as a shirt, a wacky hairdo, or you can go big and organize your friends to be all the characters from one book. Be creative, and share your spirit for reading with our Holy Rosary Community!
Lent: Grade 4 Lenten Outreach Overview:
Collecting for Uganda. Please send in at least a dollar (or more). Our overall school collection goal came up short last month.

Religion: We will be wrapping up our work on the Sacraments this week. Lent remains the heart of all of our religion lessons. The students will be introduced to the Ten Commandments as our next religion unit begins. We will focus on how the Ten Commandments apply to our actions and choices today.
Math: Last week the students worked to identify the operations that are needed to complete multi-step story problems especially as related to multiplication and division. Understanding/deciphering story problems is an important skill. Thank you for taking time to talk about the story problems with your children at home to reinforce what we are doing in school. We will have the division test on Friday. Thursday’s math homework will be a test review.
Social Studies: The students all received a study sheet for the upcoming River and Lake Test that will take place March 12th. The online practice site is very helpful. Students should spend a few minutes each night reviewing, and we will practice at school as well. Knowledge of the rivers will be important as we move forward in our studies of the Oregon Trail and Washington State History. This week we will be doing some background work to prepare for our upcoming Oregon Trail Simulation (always great fun!). Look for corrected Lewis and Clark tests from in your child’s filer no later than Tuesday.
Reading/LA: We continue with our study of myths and folktales. Students are learning about adages and proverbs along with the elements of the Hero’s Journey. This week we will be comparing the myth Hercules with a traditional folktale called Zomo’s Friends. The students will also be doing some reader’s theater presentations about Greek myths.
Oral Biography Projects: Students should be deeply into their biography books at this point and starting the note taking process with the note taking guide that was sent home last week. We will also send home index cards with each student on Monday. These can be used for their final notes. We encourage students to focus on one section at a time, plan and write notes, then practice that section before moving on. Remember, these areas need to be included in the presentation. I realize not all of the biograpy choices will have all of these sections (example, Anne Frank will not have an adult section).
- Brilliant beginning that catches the audiences attention. This is often an exciting or important moment of the person’s life. We will talk about this at school in depth.

- Important accomplishments and how they were reached—be sure to include times of struggle and how challenges were overcome
- Final thoughts when the student speaks in his or her own voice explaining what they most admire and how this person has positively impacted our world and what we can learn from this person.
I have shared some examples of past presentations and I will be going over all of this again with the students this week and answering any questions they have. On Friday the students received a template for writing their bibliographies. This sheet can be used to cite the three or more sources and will be turned in on the day of their presentation. Remember, at least three sources of information are required for this project.
Spelling: Words for Unit 17 were passed out last Friday. The test will be Friday as usual.
Homework includes oral biography preparations, math homework on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday if not completed at school and studying spelling words. Review for the River and Lake test on March 12th.
