Week of May 6th

Dear 4A Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weekend! 6.  We welcome back Mrs. Podell this week.  Look for yellow permission slips for our June 12th field trip in your child’s filer on Monday.  Please returned signed permission slips no later than Tuesday, May 14th. Thank you.

Next Thursday the 16th is the 4th Grade Charity Bake Sale. Planning ahead, we ask each student to bring in treats to sell.  We do not sell whole cakes or pies.  Items should be cut or wrapped individually.  We generally price items between 25 cents and $1.00, depending on size. You do not need to price your own items.  We will do that Thursday morning during the set up. There is not a set number of items to bring in (a couple dozen is an average amount). If the items you make are nut free or gluten free please mark them.  This is always such a fun day for the students. Please let me know if you are able to help out that day anytime between 9:45-1:30.  Thank you in advance.

MAP Testing:  We will be starting the spring MAP tests this week with language arts.  Next week we will have the reading tests, and the week of May 20th we will have the math portion. This week we plan to test Thursday morning.  Next week will be Monday and Tuesday for reading.  We most likely take the math test the following Tuesday (21st).

Math:  The students have been making good progress with their fraction work.  Look for some math homework most nights this week.  We will spend some of our math time this week reviewing past concepts and vocabulary from the year.  We will also look at the relationship between decimals and fractions.

ZZ58241399Social Studies: This week the students will receive a study sheet for the six regions of Washington State.  This is a simple test, and with a small amount of studying the students should easily get them all correct.  I will not be offering retakes for this small test.  All student should be prepared by knowing both the names and locations of the six regions by next Tuesday, May 14th.  Our class work this week will focus on some of the features and facts about each of the regions.

Science: This week we will begin our last unit on Solar Energy. In this EIE kit we will begin with our story, Lerato Cooks Up a Plan, on green engineering. This week we will also be looking at the vocabulary for our unit. Some of the vocabulary is a repeat from our EIE unit at the beginning of the year on Wind Energy, which will be a nice way to review at the end of the year too.

Religion:  Our religion work is focusing on the Beatitudes.  We learn how to be a blessing for others, and that true happiness comes from our relationship with God and living a life of kindness and mercy to others.  All students will be coming home with a copy of the Memorare, which is a 4th grade required prayer.  We will practice this prayer each morning at school, and the students should say it each night before they go to sleep.  All students need to be able to recite the prayer by Friday, June 7th.

Flat Stanley Journals are due May 22nd.  Students can turn them in earlier if they are finished. Be sure that each entry is read aloud at home and checked for accuracy! Thank you. If the your child’s flat person would like to spend a day at school I would be happy to take pictures.  If you are in need of a journal entry idea, one that students have enjoyed in the past is an entry about what their flat person does at home alone while their buddy is at school.  This can be a creative entry—do they play with the pets, cook, watch TV, etc.  You can stage pictures to match the entry.  Let me know if you have any questions.  I can also print out pictures if you send them to me, but not last minute please.

Spelling:  This week’s spelling words for Lesson 15 all change the final y to i.   Lists were passed out last Friday, and the test will be this Friday as usual.
