Hello 4A Families,
Happy first week of Advent! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! It was a pleasure to meet with you all during conferences last week! It is easy to see why I have such wonderful students—-they have wonderful families!
The signs of the Advent season are beginning to appear. As we prepare we are asked to look for ways we can serve others. As a school we are asked to participate in several outreach/service opportunities. As you know, the 4th grade students are collecting for St. Vincent DePaul. The following are some of the most needed items currently:
- Hearty Soups/Chili
- Cranberry Sauce
- Canned Pumpkin
- Stovetop Dressing
- Peanut butter (16oz)
- Canned chicken or tuna
- Canned fruit
- Cereal, Crackers
- Any non-perishable items.
All donations should be brought to school. Please consider helping your child “earn” their donation. They could do some chores around the house, rake leaves for a neighbor, or anything at all! In addition, the students wrote notes of encouragement during class that they can tape onto the items. Thank you all for your generous donations. We will also be collecting donations to purchase gift certificates for the Giving Tree. If each student would be able to donate one or two dollars, we will use the money to purchase gift cards. Thank you!
We are in need of jam/jelly jars for a special project. Preferably the jars are less than 5 inches tall. We will need them by December 9th if possible. Thank you!
Virtual Book Fair: The HRS book fair is on! Go to the Scholastic Link and click on Book Fairs. Find your fair, and then type in the zip code. Our school pops up! Once in the “fair” there are many search features and great books! The books will ship to your home.
Fundraising: Thank you for submitting your auction donations! If you haven’t yet donated…wondering what to donate? Second homes and unique experiences make great donations. Also, combine with friends and purchase a getaway to donate. Contact auction-procurement@holyrosaryws.org. The items/certificates may be delivered on a designated day in January to school.
The tree lot opens Friday after Thanksgiving (11/26). Be sure and stop by to shop for a tree or wreath and support HRS.
Reading: We are continuing with Charlotte’s Web this week. We will be completing the last section of the novel in the next two weeks. Students will focus on vocabulary, character development/traits, and fluent and expressive reading.
Language Arts: The students will begin a creative writing project called “The True Story of Santa’s Reindeer” this week. This project will reinforce paragraph skills, perspective/point of view, strong leads and conclusions, along with descriptive word choice.
Religion: Our religion classes are focusing on the Corporal Works of Mercy. The students will need to have the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy memorized for a test on Friday, December 10th. Along with our lessons on the Works of Mercy we will also focus on the Season of Advent, with Bible readings and activities to support this special time of year.
Social Studies: The students did well on the NE/SE combination map. The next map test, on December 13th, covers the Midwest States and 4 of the Great Lakes. The Lewis and Clark expedition will be heading to the Rocky Mountains this week.
Science: We are continuing to work on our final brain projects this week. Students are working in groups to create a podcast or video that teaches their peers how to prevent and evaluate concussions. Ask your child how her/his group is creatively sharing information!
Spelling: The pattern for the spelling words this week is long i sounds. The spelling test will be Friday, December 3rd.
Math: This week, we will continue with chapter four; understanding multiplication and practicing the algorithm for multi-digit multiplication. Please make sure your child is continuing to practice their basic multiplication facts (0-12) through XtraMath, flash cards, playing cards, or any other methods! Thank you for checking over your child’s homework for accuracy.
