Dear 4A Families,
Happy Veterans Day Week! Just as a reminder, there is no school this coming Friday, November 10th in honor of Veterans Day.
We want to send out one more huge thank you to all of the 4th grade families for everything you did to help your children prepare for the lovely All Saints’ Day Masses last week and weekend. We were so proud of the excellent job all of the students did reading and representing their saints during the masses and when we visited the preschool, kindergarten and 3rd grade students. We also want to thank our room parents and all the helpers for our Halloween party on Tuesday! A great time was had by all!
We have two special events this week on Thursday. First, we will have our class prayer service on Thursday honoring the veterans the students are writing about on their flags. We are looking forward to this very special event. In order to be ready to share, your child should turn in their Veterans Day Flag Project no later than this Wednesday, November 8th—at the latest. If you do not know a Veteran you can honor, you can research databases online with profiles of Veterans. Here is one site we have used in the past.
Our second special event is our first Faith Family meeting of the year. The students get to know one another and we will decorate thank you cards for the tree lot.
Conferences will be held on Monday, November 20th, Tuesday, November 21st, and Wednesday, November 22nd. If you have not yet signed up for a conference time, please do so ASAP using this link. On Monday, in your child’s filer you will find the Pre-Conference Survey. Thank you for taking time to fill out this form and return it to us no later than November 15th. Your input helps us prepare for your child’s conference.
St. Vincent DePaul Food Drive. In the spirit of giving thanks, please join us in supporting our local community struggling with food insecurity. Holy Rosary School will host a school-wide November food drive to support our local Saint Vincent de Paul chapter, who serves families in West Seattle. Please consider having your child find a way to earn money to purchase some items themselves (chores, helping a neighbor with leaves, etc.). Thank you for your support. We are definitely grateful for all of you!

Language Arts: The Saint reports are looking amazing! We will be adding some final touches this week as we complete this big project. We are also preparing a beautiful bulletin board for the main hallway you will see when you come for your conference!
Spelling: The spelling words for the week focus on long e sounds spelled ea, ee and ie. Spelling Unit 4
Reading: This week, we will be reading chapters 9-11. Students are expected to be more independent as we choose high quality quotes and explore new vocabulary from each chapter. We are also working on reading fluently. This includes expression, smoothness, and accuracy. Reading fluency directly impacts comprehension. Finally, students are analyzing characters and choosing character traits based on evidence from the story
Math: We will be wrapping up our first chapter on multiplication and division this week and have a test next Tuesday the 14th or Wednesday the 15th. We will then move on to multiplication of multi-digit numbers. Last week the students learned about the Sieve of Eratosthenes and prime numbers. Understanding and being able to name the factors and multiples of numbers is a very important skill that spans many math concepts moving forward. Continued nightly practice to build mastery of the multiplication and division facts is expected. Look for the first scored multiplication fact test the students took last week. I was very impressed with how well the students are doing. As students pass multiplication they will move on to division, then more challenging fact tests to keep the students moving forward with their skills.
Social Studies: On Thursday November 16th, the students will be tested on the combination of the NE and SE states. All students received study sheets for this test that should be in their filer. . If they have misplaced their study sheet, you can access new ones with the link. I will provide the abbreviations for this combination test.
Science: On Monday, we will be having a Kahoot study day and the test will be on Tuesday November 7th.
Reminder: Be sure you are checking your child’s filer regularly and taking out corrected papers and test sheets. I generally fold the tests in half, so be sure you check carefully. Please remove all tests and graded papers to keep the filer less cluttered.
