Week of October 28th

Dear 4A Families,

It is hard to believe that October is almost over! This month has flown by. We are all excited for the Halloween party on Thursday. Thank you to our room mom Racheal Lynch for organizing this fun event and to all the parents that are assisting with the party. Students may wear orange and black Halloween themed clothing on Thursday. No face paint please, and be sure to follow all free dress guidelines.

Please return empty and signed mid-tri/report card envelopes by Friday.

There will be no homework on Thursday! Happy Halloween.

The big day is this Friday, November 1st for the All Saints Day Mass!

Students should come to school completely dressed as their saint—We need to start heading over to the church right at 8:25—which is when the the second bell rings. Students should be in the building no later than 8:15. We will let the 4th graders enter the building at 8:05 this day. Thank you for getting your little “saints” here on time.

You will find a “Reserved for Saint……..” in each pew. If you are able to come to the Mass, look for your child’s reserved sign and sit in the pew with them. Leave the aisle spot open for your child. Please do not take pictures before or during the service. Also, please leave the “Reserved for” signs in the Church after Mass as we will need them on Sunday. You may take them home following the Sunday Mass. If you are not attending the Sunday you may take your sign.

Sunday, November 3rd the Mass begins at 10:30 (Don’t forget to change your clocks back) Your reserved signs will be in the pews. There will be some changes of position from the Friday Mass as there will be several students from the Faith Formation classes joining us. Your children should remain with you until Ms. Benson and I request they head to the back of the church to line up for the entrance. Those students that have singing parts need to arrive by 10:00) and meet Denise Davis up front to practice prior to the Mass.

Religion: The students will be visiting preschool, kindergarten and 3rd grade in their saint costumes on Thursday following the Mass. They have been working so hard on their reports and costumes. It is nice to have a chance to “teach” and share about their saint.

Spelling: There will not be a spelling test this week. The list for the week of November 4th will come on on Friday.

Math: Look for math homework Monday through Wednesday this week.  Reminder: Xtramath is a required homework assignment. Students should visit Xtramath 4 or more times each week.  Mastering multiplication and division facts for automatic recall is the goal!!

In science, we’re becoming mechanical engineers to explore machines. Last week, students explored an egg beater, a glue stick, a mechanical pencil, and a can opener. They thought about the energy that goes into each machine and the work that it does as a result. In addition, students discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each machine. Next, we will dive into simple machines so that we can get even more background knowledge for our Rube Goldberg Machines.

Social Studies: Look for corrected NE State tests in your child’s filer.  Our next set of states will be the SE Region.  All students will have a study sheet in their filer on Tuesday, the 29th.  Study sheets and online practice links for the test are located on the 4A page in the Map Study Sheet link at the top of the page. Our class work is focusing on the Coastal and Plateau Native People of Washington State.

Veterans Day: On Monday the students will receive directions and a blank flag for the Veterans Day Flag project that was mentioned in last week’s newsletter.  I will go over the project in detail in class as well so that the students know what to do. The project is due no later than next Wednesday the 6th.  Next Friday, the 8th, we will have a classroom prayer service to honor the Veterans using these flags.  If you do not know a Veteran you can honor, you can research data bases online with profiles of Veterans.  Here is one site we have used in the past.
