Dear 4A Families,

What an outstanding job the students did presenting their Oral Biography projects. I am so proud of the creativity, heart and hard work the students put into their presentations. The students spoke with such incredible expression, poise and knowledge. Thank you families for all the time you spent at home supporting your children as well. Bravo! If they have not done so already, students need to thoughtfully fill out the green reflection sheet and return their bibliographies before I can return their grade sheets. Thank you! If you have misplaced either of these forms PDF’s are available here.
MAP testing will begin this week.
We will begin with the language arts portion of the test on Monday the 4th this week. Next week reading on the 12th, and math on the 14th. As the weather gets warmer please remember to send your child with a water bottle so they can keep hydrated. Be sure the students are getting good sleep and bringing a healthy snack! Thank you,
Science Center Field Trip
On Friday we get to enjoy a fun trip to the Pacific Science Center. Students are required to wear their uniforms with a red sweatshirt or sweater. They should also bring a sack lunch, with their name written on the bag. Thank you!
End of Year Field Trip!
Looking ahead, the 4th graders will celebrate a fantastic year with an end of the year celebration/field trip to Alki Beach on Wednesday June 10th. Permission slips and further information will come home on May 11th.
Flat Stanley: Most of the students completed their Flat Stanley at School entries last week, but a few need more time. For now they should focus on their 2-3 at home entries. The Flat Stanley project will be due on May 19th. The students will be completing one final entry at school after they have turned in their project. The total entries consist of the introduction entry, school story entry, 2-3 entries at home, and the conclusion entry which will be done at school. Remember, the students should write a rough draft with some editing help from you–final drafts are then written in the journals.
Reading: The students are continuing to read the story, Mama, I’ll Give You the World written by Roni Schotter and the paired selection. The essential question states in what ways do people show they care about each other. This story is realistic fiction. The students will be learning vocabulary that connects with the theme and discussing how people care for others.
Math: Look for corrected math tests in your child’s filer on Monday. The students did well on this challenging test. Chapter 10 in math focuses on fractions and decimals. We will be looking at how they are related to each other by drawing pictures to show the fraction and writing decimals in the correct place value on charts. We start with writing decimals in the tenths place and moving to hundredths. Look for homework each day this week. We will also be preparing for the MAP test by reviewing common terms students may come across in lessons like sum, difference, product, and quotient as well as foundational skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, measuring.
Spelling: Spelling words were passed out last Friday. This week’s words all contain vowel teams, which mean two vowels next to each other that make one sound.
Social Studies: This Thursday the 7th the students will be tested on the 6 regions of Washington State. They will not have a word list for this test, so they will need to know both the names and locations. Students should do their best on spelling.
Science: This week we are continuing to review of Unit 3: The Human Machine. Students will fill out a study guide in class and practice their knowledge by studying on Kahoot. The test will be on Thursday the 14th.
Religion: The students will work on their Beatitude booklets this week. We will be learning about ways we can “LIVE” the Beatitudes in our daily lives through our actions and interactions with classmates, family and friends. Our Second Step lessons are reviewing emotion management skills.
It’s hard to believe we are in the last six weeks of the school year! Thank you for continuing to help keep your children attentive and focused as we still have so much important learning ahead! Have a wonderful week everyone.
