Week of February 8th

ZZ0BA9F066Dear 4A Families,

ZZ3DA5E327Wednesday we begin the season of Lent with the Ash Wednesday service at 8:45. Perfect uniform is required. Lent is a time when we are compelled to ask forgiveness for our sins and change our lives for the better. The ashes we receive are a sign that we are ready to change our lives. We will be focusing on three types of sacrifice and practices during Lent that will help us grow in our faith: prayer, fasting from excess and unkind actions, and good works or almsgiving. During Lent the students will be reading special Lenten prayers and Bible readings for the season.   In class today and tomorrow we will be reflecting on our plans for Lent. As a school we will be participating in several service related activities to share our gifts with those less fortunate. More on these plans next week.

ZZ5760390BOn Thursday we will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a fun party at 11:00. Students may wear pink, red, white and/or Valentine themed free dress on Thursday. The special Valentine boxes need to be at school this Wednesday as we have some activities to complete before Thursday. Thank you to our room moms Christina Kline and Kristin Bentler for all their work on the party!

Reading/LA: Last week we started reading a non-fiction trade book on horses. We will finish up this book and the related activities this week. The students are also reading Flat Stanley in preparation for the Flat Stanley journals that will be coming home on Thursday. Check your child’s filer for complete directions on this long-term project. The directions are also on the website.  At school we will be completing the first entry prior to sending home the journals.

Spelling: There will not be a spelling test this week. There will be a test next Friday the 19th. The spelling words will be plurals. In class we will be practicing the rules for making words plural. For the test next week, along with the list words the students will need to be able to apply the rules to non spelling words as well.

Math: Our math work this week will be a combination of problem solving with larger multiplication problems and work with area, perimeter and volume to support our Valentine box project. Look for math homework Monday. Tuesday there will be no new homework other than completing the Valentine math work sent home last week. Thank you for checking over your child’s calculations.

Social Studies: The students have all received a study sheet for a rivers and lakes of the United States test. There is an online practice site for this test on the 4A website under map skills called “River and Lake Review”. I will get a PDF of the test up later in the week. This test will take place Wednesday February 24th. If the students visit the site for 5 minutes each night they will learn the locations quickly! There will be a word bank for this test. We are heading to Fort Clatsop with the Lewis and Clark expedition this week.

Wishing you all a fun and relaxing Winter Break and…ZZ5E8CC568
