Dear 4A Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Hard to imagine we are already in the last week of February. The BINGO Bash on Friday was great fun. Thank you for your support of this important fundraiser for our school.
Wednesday we begin the season of Lent with the Ash Wednesday service at 8:35. Perfect uniform is required. Lent is a time when we are compelled to ask forgiveness for our sins and change our lives for the better. The ashes we receive are a sign that we are ready to change our lives. We will be focusing on three types of sacrifice and practices during Lent that will help us grow in our faith: prayer, fasting from excess and unkind actions, and good works or almsgiving. During Lent the students will be reading special Lenten prayers and Bible readings for the season. In class this week we will be reflecting on our plans for Lent. One way we will be incorporating prayer will be in the memorizing of the Memorare . We will recite the prayer daily at school, and each student will have a copy in their filer. This is a nice prayer to keep by your beside and recite each night as well. As a school we will be participating in several service related activities to share our gifts with those less fortunate. BROWN BAG FRIDAYS FOR ST. MARTIN de PORRES MEN’S SHELTER
Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to help pack and bring a lunch along with an additional item on designated Fridays during Lent.
These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine.
**If you are interested in driving a few students to deliver the lunches one Friday in Lent, please contact Kristin Bentler in the school office.
Please note the collection dates below. It is most helpful if the additional items are kept separate from the lunches.
Fri. Feb. 28 – Lunches only

– Last name N-Z men’s socks
Fri. March 27 – Lunches only
Fri. April 3 – Lunches + additional Items:
– Last name A-M: disposable razors and travel size shaving cream
– Last name N-Z: travel size toothbrush and toothpaste
Social Studies: Look for corrected 50 State tests in your child’s filer, they were returned on Friday. The students did very well overall. We will begin map work with the major rivers of our country this week. Students will have new study sheets in their filers on Tuesday. We will also be wrapping up our unit on Lewis and Clark this week.
Reading/Language Arts: This week we will start a new story about Hercules. The students will learn about myths and the Hero’s Journey. The students are working on a mini biography project in class. Each student has been assigned a person (different from their big oral biography). They will read a short biography and do a bit of research to write a summary of their lives. When we present this biography in class the students will get practice speaking in front of their classmates to practice for their big biography presentation. We will also learn about PVLEGS to support oral presentation skills.
Oral Biography Hopefully the students are reading each night in their biography. They should be using sticky notes to mark pages with information they want to include in their presentations.Last week the students also received a stapled packet to help them organized their first draft of their notes that will eventually be used to create their final note cards. The note cards will come home this week Let me know if you have any questions or need any assistance with this project.The school has purchased note cards for the students to use for their oral biography project. We will be modeling strategies to create and effectively use note cards for their presentations. Please note, students are not writing a report for this project, they are graded on their oral presentation. I encourage students to keep their biography book in their filer to bring to and from school. Next Friday, the 28th, I plan to have a work session with the class. They should all bring their oral biography books and materials on Friday for work time.
Spelling: Lesson 18 spelling words were passed out last Friday. The test will take place this Friday as usual.
Math: Thank you for continuing to check over your child’s math homework each night for accuracy and supporting them as they make any needed corrections. I am proud of the great job they are doing mastering the long division algorithm and interpreting remainders. We will continue to work for mastery of this concept all week.
